Twitter is Just One Piece of the Influencer Puzzle
Reposting my blog from today, published on socialmediagroup.com. If you’re a regular SNL watcher you would have seen this past weekend’s ‘You Can Do Anything’ skit, poking fun at “the incredibly high self esteem of the YouTube Generation.” They featured bloggers, an independent filmmaker, a popular tweeter and a YouTube personality in the skit. You can watch the entire skit below. (Our...

Personal Information Online: How Much is Too Much?
Charlie Sheen’s Infamous Tweet Have you ever posted something on Facebook or Twitter and felt immediate regret? Scrambling to delete something that truly cannot be undone? You’re not alone. From Charlie Sheen tweeting his phone number, to Anthony Weiner tweeting a questionable private picture, down to the recent tweet from New York Times’ Brian Stelter leaking news of Christiane...

You posted your Visa # on Twitter?!
A friend recently (mistakenly) posted a credit card number on twitter. It’s a long story but it had something to do with the tweet looking like an sms message on his iPhone - and off it went. I’ve been inspired to write a blog about it.  A few interesting things followed the fated tweet (which shall remain private until I post my final blog) but it’s intrigued me to gather...

Community Manager? What's that?
Community management is a hot topic in social. In fact, there are 48,258 people who list Community Manager as a title or Community Management as a keyword on LinkedIn. So it’s a hot space – I know this because I work with clients everyday supporting community management. I’ve got a bird’s eye view, so here goes my rant about what is a community manager. Community managers have been...

Secret Whitelist Protects Top Facebook Page...
A quick update to the blog I posted about the recent study on third party APIs being punished by Facebook. I just saw this posted on ‘Inside Facebook’ regarding a secret whitelist of companies that are exempt from this and are essentially protected: We’ve now learned that Facebook maintains a secret whitelist of companies that are exempt from having content posted through their...

Study: Auto-Posting to Facebook Decreases Likes...
I just came across this Applum/EdgeRank Checker study which reports an astonishing 70% less Likes and comments on brand pages that are using third party platforms for posting their Facebook updates. Why? Applum says Facebook Penalizes 3rd Party API’s EdgeRank and Collapses 3rd Party API Updates. Apparently it’s been a general consensus in the EdgeRank community that 3rd party APIs like HootSuite...

Facebook: Testing, testing 1-2-3
I saw a few posts recently about some platform testing being done by the Facebook folks. You may have already read these, but I thought I would share it.  Facebook Is Testing a “Translate” Button for Comments on Pages (Inside Facebook)  So far this is happening on Pages only, but there are some screen shots surfacing from comments in languages other than your account’s current language settings...

Request: Travel Reading Recommendations
Heya guys,  As some of you know, I am traveling to Scotland and Amsterdam this September (yay!) and have begun searching for some good new reads. I will, of course, be traveling with my Vanity Fair (never leave home without it), however I would love a few novels in-hand as well. Please leave a comment with suggestions and links if possible!  Thanks in advance :) -Karly

A Must-Know for Facebook Admins
I saw this post on All Facebook today regarding SSL certification and wanted to share, and add a few comments.  If you work in the biz, or are a Facebook admin and you’re not familiar with SSL / secured browsing, you need to get familiar - fast. You’ve probably seen the message on Facebook asking if you’d like to switch to secured browsing, many users have made the switch. What...

How-to: Encourage Social Sharing among your...
When it comes to social media marketing or advertising, one of the first questions to come after a new idea is born is “How do we get consumers to share this?”  Well, according to Sanjay Dholakia (CEO of Crowd Factory): “Enabling people to share a campaign with friends is only half the battle; you’ve got to give them a compelling reason to socialize.”  He then offers...

Charlie's Free Wheels
We went to the grand opening of Charlie’s Bike Shop today. Charlie’s is Toronto’s first youth-operated bike repair shop, will be opening at 242½ Queen Street East. The bike shop gets its name from a youth program called Charlie’s FreeWheels. Charlie’s Freewheels offers training in basic bicycle maintenance and repair as well as recreational and career development opportunities for...

4SQDayYYZ + @ToMayorFord
Our man Dan (@TheDanLevy) ran around the town yesterday tracking down all the right people. Now apparently we didn’t contact the City of Toronto early enough to get an official proclamation processed - however, they city and Mayor Ford have issued us a congratulatory letter. We think that’s a pretty big win and so do the folks at 4SQDay (they put us on the proclamation page!) Thanks...

Do You Inspire?
So you blog, you tweet, you post relevant links on Facebook but who reads them? Co-workers? Peers? Mom? Up until this weekend, if you asked my mother what I do for a living she’d say “marketing.” If you pried a little more she’d probably admit she didn’t really know. Not her fault. Sometimes it’s hard to explain what you do or what you’re involved in to...

Get Volunteering
If you’ve been thinking about giving back and volunteering, there is a new Facebook app (from Manulife) that matches you with local volunteer opportunities based on your likes and interests. Adidas pissed Warsaw off.
Yikes! The Adisucks Facebook Page has caused some commotion in Poland recently, a page currently sitting at over 25k fans who are not too happy about Adidas Poland’s plans to use a free graffiti wall in Warsaw to showcase graffiti ads. Adidas has already begun the process by covering half of the wall with black paint. A process that’s been filmed by graffiti fans. (Video here.) A...

Who needs Wednesday?
This past weekend I trekked home to Brantford to see my family and then out to Port Dover to spend some time with Dad and Anna. It was a fantastic visit, so much progress has happened since I saw him last. Anna asked dad to take out his notepad and show us what he could do. So we all sat down at the kitchen table and watched as he wrote out his phone number and our names one by one on a lined...

Do The Havana Hustle
It’s been a week since we got back from Cuba. I’ve settled back into work and life here in the cold north, and now I can finally blog about it. This was my third trip to Cuba, the first two times I stayed at (nice) resorts in Varadero, this time we did Havana. We had a great time in Cuba, and I will never again do a resort vacation. We opted to go to Havana instead of doing the...

Facebook Places Marketing Campaigns
Ok, ok so maybe Facebook Places is kinda sorta alright. As a loyal Foursquarer, I wasn’t impressed when Facebook first launched their Places platform. I didn’t see the value or relevance, and was likely blinded by simple close mindedness because nothing beat Foursquare in my books. (Still doesn’t). There was no incentive, no specials, NO BADGES!! *gasp* How would this fly? Who...

You DO make friends with salad!
I tried out a few of the Kraft Sizzling Salads over the weekend (substituting the meat for tofu of course). I must say, pleasantly surprised! I go through seasons of eating salad and hating salad. As a vegetarian, there are only so many salads I can eat before I want a heaping plate of nachos instead. That being said, the two salad kits I tried definitely took the mundane out of pebbles and...

One Cube Please
I attended The Macallan scotch tasting on the 24th with a few friends, it was a great time. The venue, 99 Sudbury was gorgeous - I can’t believe I’ve never heard of it before! I’ve been a scotch fan for a couple years now, really since Jingles entered my life. Before that I thought it tasted like burning. We have a few bottles at home for different occasions, and leap at the...

Left foot, right foot
Went home to see dad this weekend, he’s walking with a quad cane! He’s been told he has to get up and do this as much as he can each day as opposed to using the wheelchair. It was really awesome to see. Now I need to find a local speech pathologist to work with him on his Aphasia. If anyone knows a pathologist in the Brantford/Hamilton area please contact me!

What Your Facebook Relationship Status Should...
We all know relationships are much more complicated than the status options offered on facebook . That’s why the team at JESS3 came up with the following image to depict how Facebook’s relationship statuses should really be displayed. Very cute. However it lacked a certain something. The pogonophile appeal. *wipes off hands* Much better.
