One Cube Please

I attended The Macallan scotch tasting on the 24th with a few friends, it was a great time. The venue, 99 Sudbury was gorgeous - I can’t believe I’ve never heard of it before!

I’ve been a scotch fan for a couple years now, really since Jingles entered my life. Before that I thought it tasted like burning. We have a few bottles at home for different occasions, and leap at the chance to go out and try new brands.

I like a smokey scotch personally, so I’m a fan of the Macallan 15 year because I find it to be the closest to my preference. (Lagavulin) The Macallan 15 isn’t the highest price point of their offering (I think it’s about $120 a bottle) but it is the smoothest for me.

Pointers from the evening…

Adding Ice: Simple science tells us that ice cubes have a larger surface area than round ice ‘cubes’ (yes round), so they melt much faster. We use scotch rocks at home. You can buy them locally in Toronto but you often have to wait on the order because they’re always sold out. Note: gathering rocks from the lake sounds good in theory, but we broke a glass that way.

Adding water: 1-2 drops of water will open up the aroma and bring out the sweetness.

Swilling and Swirling: Swirling is for wine tours, do not spin your scotch around your glass folks! Simply bring your glass to your face and breathe in (mouth open!)

Anyway, we had a great time. I did really miss the parting gifts we received last year (a tumbler and a few small bottles) but hey, you can’t win ‘em all!
