Do You Inspire?

So you blog, you tweet, you post relevant links on Facebook but who reads them? Co-workers? Peers? Mom?

Up until this weekend, if you asked my mother what I do for a living she’d say “marketing.” If you pried a little more she’d probably admit she didn’t really know. Not her fault. Sometimes it’s hard to explain what you do or what you’re involved in to people who are living much different lives than you.

I did, however, have a short info-session during her visit this weekend and it felt good. It’s nice to see the proverbial light bulb turn on above her head and know that she now ‘gets’ me.

I once witnessed Jingles try to explain a TV spot he cut to some old friends and the Q&A that ensued.

  • So you Made it?
  • No, I cut it.
  • Oh, so you were there - you had the camera?
  • No, I cut it. I edited it down from hours of footage to make it what it is.
  • Oh… *awkward silence*

Trying to explain the frustration of timesheets, or how excited I am about some interesting digital campaign isn’t easy when your friends and loved ones are coming from different worlds. Much like I’m sure my eyes would glaze over if my brother tried to explain the ins-and-outs of spot welding.

I had a little mini-crisis earlier this week, feeling like I am boring and uninspiring and that maybe I’m not as interesting as I had once thought. I wondered about who actually reads this blog, and whether it matters. You know, a pity party of sorts. I talk about Jingles in my posts, does he read them? Will mom know I just gave her a nod? When a tree falls in the woods…

That being said, I’ve decided to investigate each blog that follows me on Tumblr and see who they are, what they’re about and hopefully be inspired to comment on a post or two on each. Here’s hoping!
